Nice was an early adopter of work on aluminum, he felt that “anodized aluminum suits the visual achievement of our time. It deals with light in a new and creative way” and that “light is evidence of life”. Nice worked on aluminum from the early 1990’s, exhibiting this work at Babcock Galleries, NY, Catherine Houard, Paris, the Albany Institute of History and Art, The Samuel Dorsky Museum, and the Oklahoma Art Institute. Nice was integral in the formation of the Black River Press at Northern Engraving, which produced works on anodized aluminum for artists including Janet Fish, Richard Haas, Robert Cottingham, Richard Anuskiewicz, and Paul Waldman.

Observations on Lithograph Print on Aluminum, Trout 9.6*

”After the abstract expressionist movement in the early 60s, a group of what are now called the new realists made individual decisions on how to reintroduce content or subject matter back into mainstream American art.
My personal interest was to paint isolated still-life objects that are cultural icons. At the time, the sneaker took the place of Van Gogh's shoes and the Coke bottle replaced the wine bottles of Cezanne.
At present, the natural icons present themselves as a reminder of the ever-presence of nature and its forces. The landscape is again isolated and represents a place and a ground for the trout.
Painting and painting on aluminum is intended to re-interpret the element of light in art. The aluminum decodes the information and produces a whole new medium which I feel represents the present.
My intention in my art is to bring the public closer and I hope more empathetic towards our host planet.”

Opalescent River, 1985, Lithograph Print on Aluminum 24” x 30”

In 1985, Nice traveled the entire Hudson River by raft and then by boat. Painting watercolors of the entire journey. The Hudson River originates at the Opalescent River, high in the Adirondack range. When painting this image, Nice positioned himself low beneath the rapids. This enabled him to “ minimize the skyline so there would be a full frontal image coming forward. I loved the physical feeling of this site, how it absolutely filled my senses, and it resulted in one of the best paintings I did on the entire trip.”

In 1998, Black River Press published an edition of 125 Lithograph Prints on Aluminum.

"I became acquainted with the world, from the saddle on a horse or the leather of my boots: slow, steady and in a focused way in which survival could depend on your familiarity with the land."  Don Nice
